With the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S24, Google announced that Android Auto will “automatically summarize long texts or busy group chats.” While we wait for that Google Assistant feature to launch, here’s more on how AI message summaries will work on Android Auto.

Of note to us is how AI message summarization is officially branded as a Google Assistant feature. While all voice output on Android Auto is powered by Assistant, an announcement in January named “Android Auto” as responsible for this capability.

Additionally, while the support document only talks about the feature being available on Android Auto, it’s a bit interesting how Google says at the beginning that “you can receive message summaries of long messages on your phone. Assistant-enabled Android device“(Our emphasis) is nothing to prevent this feature from being available on other audio-heavy form factors, such as headphones.

How to Opt In to Android Auto Message Summaries

There are two ways to opt-in to this feature. The manual way involves going to Android Auto Settings > Notifications > Play AI Message Summaries. This on/off toggle is already available, but we couldn’t trigger AI summaries in our testing.

Google prompts you when it’s first available in the second method. Simply say “Yes” to “Approve to Summarize” or “No” to let Assistant play the message in its entirety. You can enable it later from settings.

Which messages get AI summaries?

Google Assistant on Android Auto can summarize “a long message or multiple messages from the same sender or group.” Google defines a long message as “more than 40 words”.

Otherwise, the assistant reads the message without summarizing. If there are multiple conversations from different senders or apps, Assistant reads them one by one.

An example Google provided was a 3-line message that begins “So about dinner tonight, I was thinking…” The summary is “Brianna asked if you Want Thai food for dinner and are you still able to make it.”

AI privacy

Google warns that “errors may occur” given that “artificial intelligence generates summaries of your message.”

On the privacy front, “Assistant does not log messages or summaries,” while “interactions are not used to train a large language model (LLM),” which is the case with Magic Compose replies in Google Messages. is also. Google does not specify which model is being used.
