An AI maze champion emerged.
Researchers at ETH Zurich have created an AI robot that learns how to play the popular wooden maze maze game. The objective of the game is simple, using two knobs, you have to move the marble ball from the start to the end point without falling into the holes on the board. But if you’ve ever played it, you know that’s really easy to say. The scientific explanation behind its difficulty is that it requires fine motor skills, spatial reasoning abilities and a lot of practice.

The robot, called CyberRunner, is equipped with two motors (its hands), a camera (its eyes) and a computer (its brain), which allows it to play games like a human would. Like a human, CyberRunner learns through experience, taking advantage of recent advances in model-based reinforcement learning, which allows AI to make decisions and choose the most likely successful course of action by predicting the outcomes of different courses of action. Robots triumph in breaking human records
The robot practiced for 6.06 hours. Impressively, he beat the previous world record set by Lars Göran Danielsson, who set a time of 15.41 seconds in 2022. CyberRunner completed the game in 14.48 seconds — 6% faster than the human record holder.

During the learning process, the researchers say, the robots discover shortcuts and find ways to cheat — a behavior they are studying as an innate human trait. So, the researchers had to step in and instruct the Cyber Runner not to leave certain parts of the maze.

What can be learned from Cyber Runner?
Researchers Thomas Bi and Raffaello D’Andrea are making the hardware and software of the robotic system open source so that others can benefit from and learn from their progress in achieving AI expertise.
