Speaker 1: Reports say the changes to the next iPhone operating system will be significant. There may be a new design and layout. Apple may also add a new type of app store to handle demand for artificial intelligence apps, an analyst says. But how much change will consumers really accept? Balancing is a delicate issue for Apple. You don’t pack in enough flashy AI features and then investors on Wall Street will say, Apple is falling behind. But if you change things up too much, you risk being pushed. Fan Joe [00:00:30] As with the iPhone, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. But if it’s not new, we’re bored. iOS 18 is expected to be unveiled at WWDC in June. So let’s take a look at what we’ve been hearing so far with changes to the iPhone software. Some of this may excite you and other potential changes may make you roll your eyes. Speaker 1: I’m Bridget Carey, and this is another thing. The biggest visual change in iOS 18 may be more freedom in how you arrange icons on the home screen. [00:01:00] And it can allow space to exist in this invisible grid of apps. It will still be locked to a grid, so it’s not a mess, like it might be on a desktop. The report comes from sources speaking to Mac Rumors and a Bloomberg reporter, Mark Jaren, who has also been saying that the iPhone will get a more customizable home screen visually. We can also see a redesign of the menus and icons, but reports aren’t too clear on what that might mean. [00:01:30] Jaren reported that Apple was working to update the design of iOS earlier this year. We’ve seen Apple change the way iMessage works. Just check out all the options that this plus symbol has. Speaker 1: To me, it has this Vision Pro look with the round icons floating around, probably a work to eliminate the look of those operating systems. Generative AI is the biggest buzz right now, and I’ve exhausted myself talking about what AI can do on the iPhone. So [00:02:00] If you want to dig deeper into what’s possible, just check out my other videos on this. But Apple is said to be planning to use AI in a few ways. Reports indicate Apple is in talks with other companies such as Google and OpenAI to see if the companies can work together. We just don’t know what will be ready in time for June. One analyst threw an interesting twist on the idea that Apple might launch an app store just for ai. Ben told this Head of Technology Research at MIUs Research [00:02:30] CNBC that Apple is not behind on AI. Rather, if you look at Apple’s past playbook, it makes sense that Apple would likely build a dedicated AI app store to pick up existing AI apps. That way the iPhone can take advantage of AI even if Apple doesn’t have its own AI chatbot app ready, so to speak. It’s possible that Apple could put Siri in some AI smarts, according to analysts’ predictions, and some reports are saying Speaker 2: Siri [00:03:00] There may be more natural conversational skills, but talk is everywhere. Maybe there’s an API that lets Siri connect to outside services, or maybe the Assistant can work across multiple apps. Bloomberg is saying that Apple is working on something that allows Siri to better connect with the Messages app and report information. Siri will be able to handle multiple tasks in one spoken command. This is the kind of thing that would make it a really useful assistant. [00:03:30] And potentially sell more home pods. But the most noticeable change by every user is one feature. Apple said it’s coming this year. Adding RCS to iMessage, RCS is the standard for rich communication services. It is used with Android phones and putting it into iMessage means it will improve iPhone to Android communication. We can finally see that the images and video are not downgraded and pixelated. Maybe you’ll know when people are typing or maybe there’s better encryption. Sometimes [00:04:00] The change that matters most to people is just getting the basics, like texting, to work better. So what’s on your wish list for iOS 18 features? I’ll collect your best comments for a future episode. Thanks for watching and I’ll catch you next Friday for another one.
