At this year’s NAB, Blackmagic Design has announced the latest version of its popular NLE DaVinci Resolve. We’re now on version 19 – and it’s added a ton of exciting features that will simplify your post-production workflow, from a built-in film viewer to AI-powered tools like the IntelliTrack AI tracker. up to.

To tell us more about this latest release, my colleague Graham Sheldon spoke to Stuart Ashton, Business Development Manager at Blackmagic Design, about all the enhancements to this already very powerful software. Let’s take a quick look!

Blackmagic Design has added a feature called “Film Look Creator” that looks like it might make some plugins obsolete. It simulates film features such as halation, bloom, green, flicker, gate view and vignetting. We’ll be testing how it compares to some of the more popular ones in the near future.

Another interesting new tool is called “Defocus Background”. It allows the user to isolate the foreground using blur tools, and even lets you set the amount of anamorphism to mimic the look of anamorphic lenses.

New AI features

One of the new features introduced in DaVinci Resolve 19 is IntelliTrack AI. This refers to the two tracking options within the software. One is a point tracker for tracking and stabilization that allows you to track multiple points within the frame, while the other allows automatic audio panning. AI can follow objects across the frame and pan audio accordingly, adding immersion to the scene.

New features of Fairlight

The audio section called Fairlight also received some useful updates. Dialog Separator FX now allows more control when fixing dialog tracks. Until now, the “Voice Isolation” functionality only had a dial to turn it up or down, but now you have more options, with dials to control the amount of background and ambience as well.

Music Remixer FX is a new effect for remixing vocals, drums, bass, guitar and other sources and lets you remove vocals from a backing track if they interfere with your dialogue, for example.

A new Ducker Track FX simplifies auto ducking, allowing you to automatically lower the volume of background music as you speak dialogue and then resume the music after the dialogue ends. Of course this was possible before, but the new controls make it easier and better to handle.

New features for live TV broadcasts

DaVinci Resolve 19 also adds a lot of features to use it for live TV broadcasts. It all happens in the Cut page which now supports live camera recording selection for instant replay to air – complete with slow-motion features and the ability to insert stingers. Users can set so-called point-of-interest markers or POIs. This makes it easy to find them at every camera angle and broadcast them with added effects or in slow or fast motion.
